Review (by Malcolm Storey) | A large number of species are covered, each illustrated by excellent colour photographs. These show several specimens of various ages and from different angles, and often a cross-section. For consistency of colour reproduction, they were photographed in the studio in controlled lighting conditions against plain dark paper. Roger was a professional photographer before he got interested in fungi and this is evident in the quality of the photography. This is still the best photographic guide to our macromycetes. An enlarged (but smaller!) edition followed in 2006. | |||||
Errata, Corrigenda & Comments | A series of articles in Field Mycology updates the nomenclature and corrects a few misidentifications: "Update of Roger Phillips’ Mushrooms and other Fungi of Great Britain & Europe", Field Mycology:

Identification difficulty | Reliable identification of fungi requires microscopy and although this work offers a goodly number of photographs, it gives insufficient microscopic details for critical work. |
