Review (by Malcolm Storey)

Almost a coffee table book, this tome covers the Olethreutinae in great detail, with each species described under male, female (if different), variation, comments, larva, pupa, imago (ie habits), and distribution. There are no keys, so identification is by means of the beautiful colour paintings at the end of the volume. These illustrate at least one of each species, several for variable species (and a whole plate is devoted to each of Acleris hastiana, A. cristana and A. literana), but it’s fair to say that, being water-colours, the colours are nowhere near as vibrant as in life and you do need to "get your eye in" to use the illustrations effectively.

Near the middle of the book is a set of half-tone reproductions of drawings of the feedings signs, although not every species is covered. The references to these are hidden in the species accounts, so they are easily missed.

After the species accounts is an alphabetical list of food plants with the associated larvae. This is followed by the colour plates, bibliography and index.

Now hard to obtain the two volumes have been re-issued on CD-ROM.
