Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Aims to make free-living protozoa a little more accessible to students and professionals and to enable them to be identified to generic level. The bulk of the book is a beautifully illustrated dichotomous key to about 200 genera, with most illustrated by a colour photomicrograph, a line drawing to aid interpetation and a second larger stippled drawing of the orgnaism. The drawings are clear and beautiful, the photomicrographs of excellent quality and all taken using light microscopy, often with Phase Contrast or Differential Interference Contrast to make these often transparent organisms more visible. |
Examine | Compound Microscope |
Specimen Preparation | Microscopy of living animals |
Identification difficulty | Relatively straightforward (for once the author’s term, not mine!) although it is easy to get lost in a key of 199 couplets. |
