Review (by Malcolm Storey) | A nicely produced and useful guide to our Pyralids and Crambids. The species accounts include: the adult, the genitalia where needed to confirm identification, similar species, its habits and phenology; the larva and distribution. Drawings of male and female genitalia are provided for selected species of: Catoptria, Chrysocrambus, Scoparia, Eudonia, Pempeliella, Homoeosoma and Ephestia. The colour frontispiece (by M.W.F.Tweedie) shows a selection of species in their natural resting positions. The colour plates (by G.B.Senior) near the back depict a set specimen or two of each species. It’s perhaps a shame that the photographs could not be printed larger. The work complements Skinner’s Macromoth volume. |
Examine | with x8 or x10 hand lens ( Stereo Microscope is also useful) |
Specimen Preparation | Many can be identified while still alive, but pinned and set specimens may be easier. Some require gentalia preps. |
