Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Another beautifully produced mushroom book, featuring the best printing I’ve yet seen in a book - you feel as though you could pick them up. The taxonomic part is by arguably the foremost agaric mycologist in England at the time. It includes excellent photography showing fruitbodies from different angles and with important diagnostic features indicated. It includes a number of small species which are generally (and wisely!) ignored by those collecting for the table. In the usual attempt to widen appeal, a few American species are included but this just serves to confuse and mislead anybody trying to use the book for identification. In similar vein, 26 pages on cooking fungi are appended. |
Errata, Corrigenda & Comments | Because the book attempts to cover fungi from such a wide geographical area, it can be misleading to use for identification. The English names appear to have been made up specifically for this book and few are used elsehere. |
