Review (by Malcolm Storey) | A key to, and descriptions of, grassland Leptonia. The guide is intended to encourage and facilitate the use of Leptonia species as indicators of habitat quality. The descriptions include characteristic features, identification hints (very useful), geographical and ecological range, and lists the northern european countries where the species is included in Red Lists. |
Errata, Corrigenda & Comments | P50: *Entoloma mougeotii* HAS cheilocystidia. "… sterile gill edge with cystidia …" [The cheilocystidia continue to develop as the fruitbody ages, eventually forming a thick line like dirty grey hoar frost along the gill edge. This allows specimens with faded caps to be distinguished from *E. griseocyaneum* which has a fertile gill edge. MWS] |
Examine | with x8 or x10 hand lens ( Compound Microscope is also useful) |
Specimen Preparation | Fresh specimens since much use is made of colour. Many can be identified in the field, but a few require microscopic examination of spores, cystidia, etc. |
Identification difficulty | Fairly straightforward, apart from the usual difficulty of deciding whether your specimen is blue or not. |
