Specimen Preparation | Best identified from skeletal characters so can be narcotised with menthol crystals overnight, then fixed in 5% formaldehyde in seawater before long term storage in 70% alcohol. (Storage in formaldehyde would degrade the calcareous skeletons.) An alternative is to preserve the calcareous skeleton by immersing in dilute domestic bleach for 30 minutes to remove organic matter, wash well, then dry and mount of black card. (This technique is not suitable for Crisiidae as the colonies will disintegrate.) |
