Review (by Malcolm Storey) | An introduction to the most abundant and characteristic of the many species of aphid that can be found on the leaves of deciduous trees. A key is offered for each of the common tree genera. (The reader is encouraged to only attempt identification of abundant aphids, as only the most common are included.) Many species are illustrated on 16 plates of close-up colour photographs between pages 76 and 77. The short species accounts following the keys include ecology, host alternation, and a brief description. This is a rather more technical publication than others in the series. |

Specimen Preparation | Reliable identification requires critical examination and measurement of structures only visible under high magnifcation (x500) of carefully prepared microscope slide preps. |
Identification difficulty | Challenging. Aphids are very variable with a confusing variety of fomrs in each species. |
