Review (by Malcolm Storey) | A comprehensive guide to these familiar, but usually ignored, plants of watery habitats and muddy margins. Introductory sections describe the anaotomy of Callitriche, how to find the flowers, fruits etc. and how to examine the diagnostic features. Keys to the 21 European taxa, and to the 9 taxa found in Britain and Ireland are presented. For each area, two keys are given: the first using "field" characters and a second using more critical microscope-based characters. The species accounts follow the keys. These are longer than in previous works in the series as they include descriptions and a page of drawings of microscopic details, as well as European distribution maps in addition to those for our area. This is a rather more technical publication than others in the series. It will be interesting to see if including details of the European taxa will result in some of them being found in Britain and Ireland. |
