Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Tries to put the record straight about who originated the ideas behind Darwinism, but in this reviewers opinion, rather oversteps the mark. Yes, many of the ideas, or related ideas were in currency at the time - this is only to be expected. What the author forgets, in these days of universal sleaze, is the level of honesty and proper behaviour expected, nay demanded (at least in public), in Victorian times from a person of elevated position in society. There is no way such a gentleman, who worried about the effect his theories might have on the Church, would for one moment consider swindling a fellow naturalist of his due credit. Either way it doesn’t invalidate any of the concepts of Natural Selection or Evolution. The argument is merely about allocation of the credit. |
