Errata, Corrigenda & Comments

The author recommends glass tubes with natural cork stoppers. Glass specimen tubes haven’t yet been entirely replaced with plastic, but cork stoppers can be difficult to obtain.

There are specialist suppliers and Ebay often offers ranges of sizes of tapered cork stoppers. It’s best to contact the seller and confirm that the corks are natural cork, not reconstituted composite. Otherwise cork wine bottle stoppers (23mm) can be easily obtained (from home brewing suppliers as a last resort!) and they fit some (but not all) 25mm diam glass specimen tubes.

Cork stoppers should always be softened before use. Either boil in water for 2 or 3 minutes, or put on the floor and roll under your foot. Rolling slightly reduces the diameter and can be used to make an over-sized cork fit a smaller tube; just try to keep it evenly round.
