Review (by Malcolm Storey) | Introductory chapters describe history; classification; development and general structure (you need to read this one!); ecology; taxonomy and nomenclature; collection, preservation and indentification procedures; synopsis of British and Irish taxa. These are followed by the keys to genera, species and varieties. After the keys are the species descriptions with stippled drawings opposite. The book concludes with 10km dot maps, references, glossary and index. |
Examine | Stereo Microscope ( Compound Microscope is also useful) |
Specimen Preparation | Encrusted plants must be cleaned using vinegar or 10% nitric acid until bubbling ceases, and then washed before examination. |
Identification difficulty | Some of the characters take a little getting used to, and can be hard to find (try the younger internodes) and their thickness makes them difficult to view under the compound microscope. |
