Review (by Malcolm Storey) | The present work is part of a three volume set covering the macrofungi of Scandinavia and Iceland. This volume covers the basidiomycetes other than those with stipe and cap: ie Jelly fungi, resupinate and gasteroid forms. The work comprises a set of keys, initially to orders and familes, followed by keys to genera and species. Each section is written by a separate specialist. The final species entries include a short species account, with a short list of published illustrations and distribution in the Nordic countries. Although Britain is outside the study area, our mycota (especially northern England and Scotland) is very similar to Scandinavia’s, although users in the south of England should take extra care when using this work. In this volume the coverage is reasonably complete. |
Errata, Corrigenda & Comments | P247 Clavariaceae key - couplet 2. *Clavaria* spores can also have a large oil drop according to diagnosis following. |

Specimen Preparation | The usual preps of spores, basidia, cystidia etc are required. Material may be fresh or dried but must be FERTILE. Jelly fungi and resupinates are best prepared by squashing a small piece (including a it of surface) in phloxine in 10% KOH. For Gasteromycetes, a tiny piece of ripe gleba may be examined in water with a wetting agent (or wet first with alcohol). Brackets need thin sections cut with a sharp razor blade. |
Identification difficulty | Comparatively straightforward, although some of the microscopic characters may take some searching. |
