Review (by Malcolm Storey)

This two volume work covers the imagines (adults) of our macrolepidoptera. Each species is illustrated with one or more colour paintings. Immature stages of some species are illustrated with half-tone pictures.

The original 1907 edition had excellent colour plates, especially considering the technology of the day. Unfortunately, after numerous reprintings, the plates became worn. New plates were prepared for the fourth (1961) edition, but unfortunately, these fell far below the standard of the originals.
