Review (by Malcolm Storey)

The notorious Schäffer Test for distinguishing the two groups of Agaricus consists of concentrated nitric acid and aniline applied to the cap as intersecting streaks. But the test is little-used since nobody wants to carry concentrated nitric acid in their foray kit!

Glacial acetic acid is apparently a satisfactory replacement for the concentrated nitric acid.

The modified test was originally published by Peterson et al (2000)
