Arion rufus (Red Slug, Large Red Slug) may be included in identification literature listed under the following higher taxa:

NBNNBN (data.nbn.org.uk) has a distribution map for Arion rufus (Red Slug, Large Red Slug)
BioInfoBioInfo (www.bioinfo.org.uk) has 1 host/parasite/foodplant and/or other relationships for Arion rufus (Red Slug, Large Red Slug)

A large black, brown, grey, orange or dull yellowish slug.

The fringe generally contrasts strongly with the rest of the upper surface, ie bright orange or red against a brown or black body. It also usually has reddish pigment on both sides below the mantle and on the sole near the head.

The lineolations may extend onto the sole, sometimes right across, but this character is not always present. The only other species in the group with this character is A. ater where some dark-soled morphs have lineolations but this is rare.

It occasionally sways from side to side in the contracted state when firmly stroked from head to tail.
