Brittle Stars can be narcotised with lidocane (easily available in the form of a throat spray from chemists.) This enables examination without loss of limbs. Have only tried this on a very small specimen (such as are common under stones in rockpools or between fronds of seaweed) and it was even possible to put it in a cavity slide under a coverslip without damage.
