The common inkcap generally grows from buried wood or roots so often appears to be growing on the ground. It should not be eaten as it contains a chemical which causes an adverse reaction when consumed with alcohol or if alcohol is consumed up to several days afterwards. Symptoms are alarming with flushing, palpitations and great discomfort, but healthy people normally recover.
