These are not puff-balls - they rely on animals eating them to spread the spores, so ripe spores can be found even while the fruitbody is soft and semi-gelatinised, though not if still white within.

The spores are coloured so show up reasonbly well, but the basidia seem to break up in ammonia and to resist staining by Cotton Blue in Lactophenol and Melzer’s Iodine. Melzer’s seems as good as anything.
