A small toadstool with a grey pellucid-striate cap and smelling like cigarette ash or dirty ashtrays - quite distinct from the ’alkaline’ smell (like crushed poppy petals or pea pods) of Mycena leptocephala with which it is often confused. M. aetites is one of the commonest grassland Mycenas.
