A small toadstool with a yellow-green to pale brown pellucid-striate cap and green stem. The fruitbody bruises bright green where damaged and it smells of mice (acetamide). It is widespread and locally common in poorly manured, semi-natural grassland, in meadows and hayfields, roadsides, woodland margins, usually in rather dry to fairly wet places on calcareous soils.
